Shopping Spotlight: Hidden Treasures on Cannon Street

If you’ve ever been to Charleston before, you’ve probably gone home with souvenirs and gifts found somewhere on King Street or in the market. Charleston is, after all, one of the best shopping cities in the South, so going home empty handed takes serious will power. If you want to shop like a local however, try visiting shops that are somewhat off the beaten path in order to access all the hidden treasures this city has to offer.

To start off try exploring Cannon Street, located just off Upper King. Walk a short distance to the West and you’ll run into three local favorites: Mac and Murphy, Sugar Bakeshop, and Indigo & Cotton.

First you’ll hit Sugar Bakeshop (59 Cannon Street), which offers sweets and treats just a delicious as the name sounds. Choose from an assortment of homemade cupcakes, cookies, tarts, and even dog treats or call ahead to have the bakery whip up one of their signature cakes or pies. Added bonus: they offer special travel tins and shipping if you want to take something home.

Across the street you’ll see Mac and Murphy (74 ½ Cannon Street)—a paper, wedding, and lifestyle boutique that’s helping to revive the concept of snail mail. Choose from an assortment of pretty letter pressed cards, custom stationary, wrapping accessories, or gifts to bring home such as wall prints, calendars, or a recipe box.

A little farther down Cannon lies Indigo & Cotton (79 Cannon Street)—one of the best destinations for menswear. Either shop for yourself or pick up a gift for the stylish man in your life. Some of my favorites include a Filson duffle bag, a Harry’s shave kit, or a pair of Happy Socks. Plus, this Charleston tote is great for anyone!
