Titled “One of America’s most beautiful and historic cemeteries”, Magnolia Cemetery is a beautiful tribute to some of Charleston’s most important history.
Stretched over 92 acres, this Charleston landmark features ponds, lush greenery, and marsh views just a five-minute car ride from downtown. It is the serene home of late Thomas Bennett, Langdon Cheves, Horace L. Hunley and Robert Barnwell Rhett and hundreds of confederate soldiers from the Civil War.
In addition to these prominent Holy City figures, it is also home to thousands of Charleston rooted families, featuring beautifully elaborate headstones and intricate mausoleums. In late evening, bright oranges and pinks light the cemetery as the sun sets through impressive oak trees and reflects off the Cooper River.
By taking a step back in time and visiting Magnolia, you can get closer to Charleston’s history and leaders than ever before. Accommodating and insightful tour guides can take you on a tour, or you are free to roam the grounds yourself.
Tours of this cemetery run Monday through Friday, 9am to 5pm.
