3 Things Visitors Should Know about Charleston Courtesy of a Charlestonian

Ahh, good ol’ Charleston. What isn’t there to love about the Holy City? Considering that the town rakes in about 4 billion dollars a year in tourism, apparently there is a lot to love. Yet, despite the enjoyable carriage rides and leisurely walks, many visitors miss out on what Charleston in its entirety has to offer. As a native, I’m going to fix that. Here are three things visitors should know about Charleston.

1. Charleston is more than Downtown

One can’t deny the fact that Downtown is the part of the city that attracts the most visitors. The architecture, restaurants, market, and retail stores fascinate many. However, there is more to Charleston then the peninsula. If you’re looking to eat and shop in a less crowded area, cross the Ashley River bridge to West Ashley. If you’re still looking to be in an area abounding with locals and other visitors, hop on interstate 26 to North Charleston, which is home to big retail centers such as Northwoods Mall and the Tanger Outlet. Lastly, if you’re looking for a more relaxing, alternative visit without a crowd and free of shopping we need travel no further than Kiawah or Sullivan’s islands, which offer the beach bum vibe coupled with swell dining and entertainment options.

2. Be mindful that city loves no persons more than tourists and students

You may be scratching your head at that statement. Understand that Charleston retailers love to scam no one more than tourists and students, as most have no real knowledge of the city. When purchasing items, whether it be clothing or hotel rooms, always check with a local or regular visitors to ensure that you’re paying the appropriate price.

3. Eat Everything

Lastly, Charleston is filled beyond capacity with restaurants of different cultures and cuisines. Whether you’re looking for the good ol’ southern food, exotic fusion, or cross continental cuisine, Charleston offers a variety of restaurants for every taste, curiosity, and budget. Take advantage of visiting the city as an opportunity to satisfy your taste buds.

So after the carriage rides and ghost tours, remember to travel outside the peninsula, say no to scams, and eat well.
